Patna, December 10, 2025: Following the defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections, Senior leader Vijay Krishna, a former MP, former minister, and one of the few politicians to have defeated Nitish Kumar from the Barh Lok Sabha seat, has resigned from the party on Wednesday.
He announced his withdrawal from active politics as well.
Vijay Krishna sent a formal letter to RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, resigning from all positions, including the party’s primary membership.
In his letter, he wrote: “I have decided to withdraw from party politics and active politics. Therefore, I am resigning from the primary membership and all positions of the RJD. Kindly accept my resignation.”
Vijay Krishna has a long association with Lalu Prasad Yadav and an early journey with Nitish Kumar:
Vijay Krishna, Lalu Prasad Yadav and CM Nitish Kumar all emerged from the JP movement.
He shared a long association with both leaders, particularly Nitish Kumar, as their native villages, Bakhtiyarpur (Nitish Kumar) and Kalyanpur (Vijay Krishna), are just eight kilometers apart.
The two began their political journey together, often travelling by train during their early political days.
However, when Nitish Kumar split from Lalu Prasad Yadav in the 1990s, Vijay Krishna chose to remain with Lalu Prasad, marking the beginning of their political divergence.
Before the delimitation of constituencies, both Nitish Kumar and Vijay Krishna contested from the Barh Lok Sabha seat.
Their rivalry became a defining chapter of Bihar’s political history.
In 1999, Nitish Kumar defeated Vijay Krishna.
In 2004, sensing stiff competition, Nitish Kumar contested from both Barh and Nalanda, and Krishna defeated Nitish Kumar in Barh and entered the Lok Sabha.
Nitish Kumar won the Nalanda seat in the same election.
Krishna remained a close confidant and advisor to Lalu Prasad Yadav throughout this period.
Vijay Krishna’s political career:
Vijay Krishna began his political journey with the Samajwadi Yuva Sabha.
In 1977, he became the General Secretary of the Janata Party in Bihar.
He won the Barh Assembly seat twice consecutively in 1990 and 1995 on the Janata Dal ticket.
He served as a minister in both the Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi governments.
His resignation at this juncture is being viewed as yet another blow to the RJD, already grappling with internal discontent and electoral setbacks.
