Patna, December 18, 2025: The central government has taken a major decision to improve road connectivity by approving the Khagaria-Purnea stretch on Thursday.

The long-pending demand to convert the Khagaria-Purnea stretch from two-lane to four-lane is expected to significantly ease travel for commuters.

At present, while most parts of the Patna-Purnea road via Begusarai and Khagaria are four-lane, the 143-kilometre stretch from Khagaria to Purnea remains only two lanes wide, causing frequent traffic congestion and inconvenience.

Khagaria MP Rajesh Verma highlighted the Khagaria-Purnea stretch in the Lok Sabha:

Lok Sabha MP from Khagaria, Rajesh Verma, highlighted the difficulties faced by people travelling between Patna to Purnea due to the narrow road on this section.

He sought clarity from the government on when the four-lane construction work would be completed.

Responding to the question, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highway Nitin Gadkari informed the House that the Khagaria-Purnea four-lane highway project has been approved at an estimated cost of Rs 4,000 crore

The project involves upgrading 143 kilometres of road to four lanes.

Nitin Gadkari assured that the cabinet nod is expected soon:

Nitin Gadkari stated that while the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway has cleared the project, final cabinet approval is still pending.

He said the cabinet nod is expected within the next 10 to 15 days, after which the remaining formalities will be completed.

The Union Minister further assured that construction work will begin in one to one-and-a-half months, and the tender process will be initiated soon.

Once completed, the four-lane highway is expected to eliminate traffic bottlenecks and provide smoother, faster, and safer connectivity between Patna and Seemanchal, including Purnea.

The decision has been welcomed as a significant infrastructure boost for northern and eastern Bihar, particularly for trade, travel, and regional development.
