Bihar to host its first Nuclear Power Plant: Centre approves historic energy initiative.

Patna, June 24, 2025: In a landmark decision, the Central Government has approved the establishment of Bihar’s first nuclear power plant, marking a significant step towards energy self-sufficiency for the state.
The announcement was made by Union Energy Minister Manohar Lal Khattar during a regional conference of energy ministers held in Patna on Tuesday.
Khattar stated that Bihar is among the six states selected for the installation of Small Modular Reactor (SMRs)—next-generation nuclear power systems designed to meet local power demands with greater efficiency, safety, and lower cost.
“The Bihar government demanded the setup of a nuclear power plant, and we have given the green signal. The Central Government is fully committed to supporting Bihar in this project,” the Union Minister said, reiterating the benefits of the “double engine government” model in facilitating developmental progress.
Key Features of Nuclear Power Plant:
It will be the first nuclear power plant in Bihar and it will be installed with Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology.

Centre has a plan to set up one nuclear plant in every state and the project is aimed at strengthening energy security, supporting industrial growth, and promoting green energy transition.
Khattar emphasized that with India’s growing economic pace, electricity demand is increasing sharply, and nuclear power offers a reliable, long-term, and sustainable solution.
SMRs, he noted, are particularly suitable for regions like Bihar due to their compact design, lower installation cost, and high safety standards.
“SMRs can be installed faster, maintained more easily, and are ideal for less populated or medium energy consumption areas,” Khattar added.
Benefits for Bihar:
It would provide a long-term sustainable and clean energy source with a significant technological investment in the state. It would create thousands of new jobs during construction and operation and boost industrial and economic development.
The announcement has been hailed as a historic moment for Bihar, as the state prepares to host a nuclear facility for the first time.
Energy experts believe the move could redefine Bihar’s power landscape and turn it into a hub for modern energy solutions. The conference, attended by energy ministers from Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands was focused on strengthening regional energy cooperation and modernizing infrastructure to meet future demands.
