Patna, May 29, 2024: Around 50 students from three districts of Bihar fell sick inside school premises on Wednesday as extreme heat continued to sweep across the state.

Students admitted to the hospital:

The affected children, aged between 10 to 15 years, suffered from heat stroke and dehydration.

They were admitted to hospitals and are reported to be out of danger.

Despite the severe heat wave conditions, the state government has not declared summer holidays in government schools so far. As a result, many children have been falling ill in different districts.

Incidents were reported from Sheikhpura, Begusarai, and East Champaran districts during school hours on Wednesday.

In Sheikhpura, around two dozen students fainted inside the premises of a government middle school in Mankol village. Teachers, with the help of villagers, rescued the children and took them to Sadar Hospital.

Angry over the incident, villagers blocked the main road near Mankol village. Parents alleged that children had gone to school without food and fainted due to exhaustion.

“After two hours, teachers informed us that the children were sick. When we reached the school, many were lying unconscious and crying. We rushed them to the hospital,” said Ram Kumar Singh, a parent from Mankol village.

In Begusarai, around 20 students also fell ill from the heat and were hospitalized. Similar cases were reported from Motihari, where two students fainted in school.

Parents protested against the Education Department:

Following these incidents, parents in Sheikhpura and Begusarai staged protests and shouted slogans against KK Pathak, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Education Department, demanding immediate summer holidays.

“The officials are acting arbitrarily. Even after this unbearable heat, schools are open. Many children go to school early in the morning without eating, and they fall sick due to heat stroke,” said Shanti Devi, another parent from Mankol village.

Doctors treating the children confirmed that dehydration caused the health crisis.

“The classrooms had poor ventilation and seating arrangements. Due to dehydration, the students started fainting one after another. All of them have been treated with ORS and medicines, and their condition is stable now,” said Dr. Rajnikant of Sheikhpura Sadar Hospital.
