New Delhi, February 24, 2026: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the extension of the Ahmedabad Metro corridor from GIFT City to Shahpur.
The proposed extension will be 3.33 kilometres long and will include three elevated metro stations.
The project is scheduled to be completed within four years.
The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 1,067.35 crore.
According to projections, the extended corridor is expected to serve around 23,702 passengers by 2029, which is likely to increase to 58,059 passengers by 2041.
Boost to Ahmedabad-GIFT connectivity:
The new metro extension is aimed at strengthening connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT City region.
Major multinational companies, educational institutions, and commercial hubs located along the proposed route are expected to benefit directly from improved transit access.
The project will also provide substantial relief to daily commuters, travelling between Ahmedabad and GIFT City for business, employment and education, thereby enhancing overall network integration and passenger convenience.

The metro extension is expected to generate approximately 1,000 jobs during the construction phase.
After completion, around 250 personnel will be employed for operations and maintenance.
In addition to direct employment, the project is likely to create significant indirect job opportunities through allied activities.
Project implementation:
The project will be implemented by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC), a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat.
At present, the Ahmedabad Metro spans 68.28 km under Phase-1 and Phase-2, with a total of 53 operational stations.
Phase 1 includes the APMC to Motera Stadium (North-South Corridor) and Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam (East-West Corridor), which became operational in September 2022.

Phase 2 covers the Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir and GNLU to GIFT City sections and will become operational in January 2026.
The current average daily ridership stands at approximately 1.6 lakh passengers, reflecting the growing dependence on metro services in the region.
