Patna, June 28, 2024: A girder of an under-construction road bridge collapsed in Bihar’s Madhubani district on Friday.
Girder of a bridge collapsed in Lalwarhi village:
The bridge was being built over the Bhutahi Balan River at Lalwarhi village under Madhe block.
Officials said the girder had been installed two days earlier, and the collapse occurred due to strong water flow in the river following rainfall.
Fifth incident in 10 days:
This was the fifth incident of such bridge-related collapse incident reported in Bihar in the past 10 days.
Earlier, on June 18, a bridge costing around Rs 12 crore on the Bakra river in Sikti block of Araria district collapsed.
On June 22, a bridge on a canal linking Daraunda and Maharajganj blocks in Siwan district collapsed.
On June 23, another bridge collapsed in the Ghodasahan block in East Champaran.
On June 27, a 70-metre-long bridge fell in Kishanganj district.
Villagers of Lalwarhi said construction has been underway there for nearly five years.
Four pillars had already been completed, and the girder was placed between two of them.
Some local residents alleged that misalignment of the girder and corruption in construction work may have led to the collapse.
There was no official statement on the technical cause from the administration at the time of filing this report.
