Patna, June 8, 2024: A Chinese national lodged in Muzaffarpur’s Khudiram Bose Central Jail allegedly attempted to mutilate himself inside the prison washroom on Saturday, creating panic among jail authorities and inmates.

The Chinese national entered Indian territory without valid documents:

The prisoner, identified as Li Jiaqi (60), was arrested on June 6 at the Barriya bus stand in Muzaffarpur after he was found to have entered India illegally through the Nepal border without a valid visa. He had been kept in judicial custody since his arrest.

According to officials, Jiaqi was discovered lying unconscious inside the jail washroom. He is suspected of having attempted to cut his private parts using the glass frame of his spectacles.

He was immediately shifted to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), where doctors said his condition is stable.

“The Chinese inmate attempted self-harm. He is currently under treatment,” the superintendent of Khudiram Bose Central Jail said.

Officials initiated a probe into this incident:

The incident triggered a stir inside the jail premises, prompting senior jail officials to question inmates and review the circumstances that led to the self-harm attempt.

Earlier, Muzaffarpur police had recovered Chinese, Nepalese, and Indian currency, a mobile phone, a map of China, and three stone statues from Li Jiaqi at the time of his arrest.
