New Delhi/Patna, August 11, 2025: Ahead of the Bihar assembly elections, PM Modi on Monday took a veiled swipe at the opposition while inaugurating a new residential complex for Members of Parliament in Delhi.

The project, located on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, features four towers with 184 flats.

Each tower is named after a major river of India—Krishna, Godavari, Kosi, and Hoogly—with the Kosi tower dedicated to the river in Bihar.

PM Modi criticized opposition:

Speaking at the event, PM Narendra Modi accused opposition leaders of viewing every decision through a political lens.

“Some people will also have problems. If the river is named Kosi, they will not see the river’s name—they will see the Bihar elections.

I would tell such narrow-minded people that the tradition of naming rivers binds us in the thread of unity of the country,” he said.

PM Modi said the four rivers represented lifelines for millions and expressed hope that the new housing would bring a “stream of happiness” to MPs, inspired by these rivers.

About the Kosi River:

Known as the Sorrow of Bihar, the Kosi river originates in Tibet, flows through China and Nepal, and meets the Ganga in India.

During the monsoon, it often causes devastating floods in North Bihar, destroying crops, submerging villages, and displacing thousands.

Over the past 250 years, the river’s course has shifted within a 120 km radius, making flood management a major challenge.

Despite its destructive potential, the Kosi is also a vital lifeline for the region, supplying drinking water and irrigating farmlands.

Hydroelectric projects and dams along its course contribute to local energy needs.

Current flood situation in Bihar:

Bihar is presently battling severe floods, worsened by heavy rainfall in Nepal. The water levels of several rivers, including the Kosi, are rising dangerously.

According to the Disaster Management Department, floods have affected about 13 lakh people in 230 Panchayats so far in 2025.

Over a thousand boats are currently deployed for rescue and relief operations.
