A deer trapped in the gate of Gandak barrage.
Patna, August 22:
A deer was trapped in the gate of Valmikinagar Gandak barrage, situated on the Indo-Nepal border on Thursday.
The deer was eventually rescued by the forest officials of Nepal after their Indian counterparts informed the incident.
Neeraj Narayan, the divisional forest officer of Valmikinagar Tiger Reserve confirmed that a deer was trapped at the barrage gate.
“Since the animal was struck at gate number 36 on the Nepalese side, the Chitwan forest area officers in Nepal were informed. They have conducted the rescue and took the animal with them,” Narayan said
The officer also said that the animal had reportedly succumbed.
The Valmikinagar Gandak Barrage has 36 gates, with 18 on the Indian side and the other 18 in Nepal.
The deer was believed to have strayed from the Valmikinagar Tiger Reserve (VTR) or Chitwan National Park and was carried away by the water of the Gandak River, eventually getting caught in the barrage gate located on the Nepalese side. The local residents captured the incident on cameras and uploaded it on social media.
The increased water flow in the Gandak River is due to heavy rainfall in Nepal, which led to the release of 236,000 cusecs of water. This surge in water levels is likely what caused the deer to lose its footing and be swept away from the forest, ultimately reaching the barrage gate.

The VTR, a vast and biodiverse sanctuary, is home to thousands of deer. These animals often wander to the riverbanks in search of food and water.
The exact origin of the seer currently trapped at the barrage remains uncertain. It is unclear whether the deer came from the forests of Nepal or strayed from VTR in India. The confusion is further complicated by the geographical location of the barrage which straddles the Indo-Nepal border.
