Patna, February 1, 2026: Reacting sharply to the Union Budget for the financial year 2026-27 presented in the Lok Sabha, RJD spokesperson Chittranjan Gagan on Saturday termed it the most disappointing budget in the country’s history, alleging that it offers nothing but empty promises.
He said the budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman failed to address key public concerns and completely ignored Bihar.
Gagan pointed out that there was widespread expectation that the railway concessions for senior citizens, suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, would be restored, especially after recommendations from a parliamentary committee.
However, he said the government maintained complete silence on the issue.
No tax relief in union budget, says RJD spokesperson:
He also criticized the centre for ignoring the long-pending demand to increase the pension amount for 78 lakh subscribers of the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS)-95.
“There has been no relief in income tax, no support for pensioners, and not even a token gesture for Bihar in the Union budget,” the RJD spokesperson said.

Taking strong exception to the alleged neglect of Bihar, Gagan said the state appeared to have vanished from the priorities of the NDA government at the Centre. “The Finance Minister did not mention Bihar even once in her budget speech. In contrast, Bihar was mentioned eight times in the 2025-26 union budget and 11 times in the 2024-25 union budget,” he said.
Bihar was sidelined in the Union Budget, says Gagan:
Calling it a failure of the double-engine government, Gagan said it was ironic that Bihar was ignored despite playing a crucial role in the formation of the NDA government at the Centre.
Referring to the findings of the Economic Survey, he said Bihar deserved either special category status or a special financial package, but neither was announced.
“Instead of meaningful support, Bihar has been completely side-lined. The announcement of a ship repair facility in Patna is nothing more than a symbolic gesture,” he said.
The RJD spokesperson concluded that the union budget reflects the centre’s apathy towards Bihar and its pressing socio-economic challenges.
