Antigua, June 20, 2024: Despite a heroic unbeaten 80 by Andries Gous and a fine 38 from Harmeet Singh, the USA fell 18 runs short against South Africa in their Super 8 clash at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, on Wednesday.
Chasing 195, the USA openers Steven Taylor and Andries Gous got off to a brisk start, putting up 33 inside the first 3.3 overs. But Taylor fell soon after—caught by Heinrich Klaasen off Kagiso Rabada—and wickets continued to fall at the other end.
Gous, however, remained in stunning touch—smashing 80 off just 47 deliveries with 5 fours and 5 sixes—and finally stitched a 93-run stand with Harmeet Singh. But the USA eventually fell short of the target.
Kagiso Rabada is the pick of South Africa’s bowlers:
Rabada was the pick of the South African bowlers, claiming 3 for 18 in his four overs.
Earlier, the USA had won the toss and opted to field. Unlike the low-scoring surfaces in New York, the Antigua pitch favoured batters. South Africa lost their wicket on 16, but Quinton de Kock (74) and captain Aiden Markram (46) took control. Heinrich Klaasen (36) and Tristan Stubbs (20) added quick runs at the end to propel South Africa to 194/4 in 20 overs.
For the USA, Saurabh Netravalkar and Harmeet Singh picked up two wickets each.
