Four bridges collapsed in the last 24 hours in Bihar.
Patna July 3: Four bridges collapsed in Bihar’s Saran and Siwan districts within the past 24 hours, according to an official.
On Wednesday, a bridge in Saran district submerged in the river. Officials noted that the bridge was old and succumbed to the high water flow caused by continuous rain over the last two days.
The strong water flow eroded the area around one of the pillars, weakening it and leading to the collapse. This incident took place at Janata Bazar in Lahladpur block. The bridge was a key route to Baba Dhund Nath temple.
Local residents, aware of the bridge’s imminent collapse, gathered in large numbers and recorded the incident on their mobile phones. The Block Development Officer of Lahladpur and other senior officials arrived at the scene. Following their instructions, barricading was set up around the bridge. No officials were willing to comment on the matter.
The second bridge collapsed in Siwan’s Deoria village of Maharajganj subdivision on Wednesday. This bridge, built on the Gandak River, had never been repaired according to villagers and was 35 to 40 years old. It served as the only means of transportation for hundreds of people.
The third bridge collapse occurred in Tevatha Panchayat of Maharajganj block. This bridge connected Nautan and Sikandarpur villages. The fourth bridge collapse happened in Dhamai village, also on the Gandak River, due to a strong flow of water. Villagers noted that this bridge had been repaired only a few days earlier.
These recent incidents follow a series of bridge collapses in the region: one in Araria on June 18, another in Siwan on June 22, in Motihari on June 23, in Kishanganj on June 27, in Madhubani on June 28, and again in Kishanganj on June 30.
