First session of 18th Bihar Legislative Assembly begins; MLAs take oath amid warm gestures across political lines.

Patna, December 1, 2025: The first session of the 18th Bihar Legislative Assembly commenced on Monday, with Pro-tem Speaker Narendra Narayan Singh administering the oath of office to the newly elected MLAs.
The first day’s proceedings are currently underway, and the Pro-tem Speaker is addressing the House as members take their oaths.
A total of 243 MLAs are scheduled to be sworn in today.
Deputy CMs and Tejashwi Yadav were taken oaths in the initial period of the Bihar Assembly session:
Deputy Chief Minister and newly elected MLA from Tarapur, Samrat Choudhary, was the first to take the oath.
He was followed by Vijay Sinha, the newly elected MLA from Lakhisarai.
A notable moment occurred when Tejashwi Yadav stood up and greeted Samrat Choudhary with a handshake as the latter concluded his oath.
After taking the oath, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha touched Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s feet as a gesture of respect.

Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav and Vijay Sinha also exchanged a warm hug.
The Chief Minister and Tejashwi Yadav greeted each other with folded hands, signalling a cordial beginning to the new session.
Tejashwi Yadav has also been sworn in as a member of the Assembly.
He greeted all leaders with folded hands as Pro-tem Speaker Narendra Narayan administered his oath.
Several senior leaders and ministers completed their oath-taking afterwards.
These included Vijay Kumar Choudhary, Bijendra Yadav, Shravan Kumar, Lesy Singh, Mangal Pandey, Prem Kumar, Nitin Navin, Sunil Kumar, Rankripal Yadav, Sanjay Singh, Arun Shankar Prasad, Surendra Mehta, Rama Nishad, Shreyasi Singh, Sanjay Kumar, Sanjay Kumar Singh, and others.
Ministers are being sworn in first, followed by other members.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is a Member of the Legislative Council, was also present in the Assembly as the leader of the house.
Election results context:
In the recently concluded 2025 Bihar Assembly election, the NDA consisting of BJP, JDU, LJPRV, HAM and RLM secured a sweeping victory with 202 seats.

The opposition Grand Alliance managed to win 35 seats, with RJD securing 25, Congress 6, CPI-ML 2, IIP 1 and one seat goes to another party. AIMIM also registered a notable performance by winning 5 seats.
