Patna, May 30, 2024: Hot and humid conditions have turned deadly across Bihar, with at least 19 deaths due to heatstroke reported in the last 24 hours as temperatures soared beyond 45 degrees Celsius in most districts.
The fatalities include police personnel, teachers and farmers.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heatwave alert for the next two days, warning of extreme conditions across central and southern Bihar.
Fatalities due to heatstroke across the state:
In Nalanda, three people—teacher Vijay Kumar Sinha, home guard Jawan Ramesh Prasad (54), and farmer Surendra Prasad—lost their lives due to heatstroke.
“Vijay Kumar Sinha, posted at Tharthari Middle School, fell ill from heatstroke and was rushed to the hospital, where he died,” said Uma Kumari, principal of the school.
In Buxar, three deaths have also been reported. A youth was found dead by the roadside in the Sikraul police station area, suspected of heatstroke.
A BPM jawan from the Gorkha regiment died during a flag march in Nawanagar, while a health worker from Itarhi PHC succumbed at the Sadar Hospital.
The BMP Jawan fell ill during duty and was declared dead at the hospital,” said Buxar SP Manish Kumar.
Rohtas district recorded three deaths, including Sub-inspector Devnath Ram, posted at Dehri Police Line. He was a resident of Bihiya in Bhojpur.
An elderly man died in Kargahar Badhari Market, while a woman succumbed near Kali Asthan in Sasaram town.
In Bhojpur, three people, Chandrama Giri (80), Gupta Nath Sharma (60), and Keshav Prasad Singh (30), died due to heatstroke in Gajarajganj, Barhara, and Jagdishpur, respectively.
The fierce heat has also taken two lives in West Champaran—a 40-year-old unidentified man from Mahanakuli village in Chanpatia block, a 16-year-old boy, Golu, from Majra village in Ramnadar block.
In Gopalganj, a tourist from Maharashtra, identified as Somnath Agra (60), died of heatstroke while en route to Nepal.
In Arwal, Head Constable Nikku Ahuja, who had come from Arunachal Pradesh for election duty, also lost his life while stationed at a government school in Rampur Chauram village.
Deaths have also been reported from Sheikhpura, where an Anganwadi assistant succumbed, and in Begusarai, where a farmer died. Another fatality was reported in Aurangabad.

Authorities said most cases are being verified, and official confirmation will follow after the post-mortem reports.
